I don't know if this answers your question but I remember Status Quo doing a charity concert at the Birmingham NEC in about 1984, and Prince Charles was in the crowd (in a VIP area). Before Quo took to the stage the audience were chanting "Charlie", then Quo started playing Caroline, the chanting subsided and started again mid way through the set.

Thankyou Starman 2112, i think this may well be correct as ive only heard it on a tape and may be what they were referring to.
