Please would you help me find out what you call the style of music for "The girl from Ipanema"&  that Robbie and Nicole song "something stupid".

Henry Mancini does/did a lot of music in that style and the soundtrack to the Pink Panther is full of that kind of music which I call 60's cocktail party music but that's because I don't know how else to describe it.

I love that style and thought it might be smooth jazz and although "The girl from Ipanema" is on most smooth jazz albums it's not smooth jazz that I'm after. My boyfriend suggested it might be contemporary but I don't know. I'd like to buy some albums but don't know which section of the music shop to go to.
Thanks for your help

Bossa Nova
The rhythm is bossa nova, but it is basically easy listening I would say! Could you not just buy a Mancini album? It is 60's cheese, isn't it!! I'm not sure there is a name for exactly what you are describing..
'The girl from Ipanema' was written by Antonio Carlos Jobim, his wife, Astrud Gilberto had a hit with this song.  Look for Jobim, and Stan Getz.  Burt Bacharah (especially when writting with Hal David) wrote a lot of Bossa Nova style songs, as did the Style Council.

try first easy listening and instrumental.

also lounge, loungecore, soundtracks, space age pop even. it may be easier to look on the net and buy online, you can hear audio clips on many sites .

try this site for some general info on the kind of music you mentioned:

It's easy listening - a good introduction would be the "Music to Watch Girls By" series of CDs and look out for "In flight entertainment" and "Ready Steady Boogaloo"
