I've just bought a copy of the latest CD by Anastacia, but because it's copy controlled I can't copy the tracks onto my MP3 player. I would just like to add that I am copying these tracks for my own personal use. Has anyone got any suggestions about how I can do this?

Connect a regular CD player to the "line in" socket on the back of your computer and record to mp3 in real time.

Thanks. But how do I actually set up the PC to record in real time?

I've used a program called ImToo CD ripper (shareware) before to get around the copy-controlled stuff, also for my own legal Net MD use I must add! When the software looks at the CD, it'll see audio tracks 1 to 14 or whatever and lastly a data track. If you rip all of the audio tracks to wav or MP3 leaving the data track, everything will be fine!

In the UK, copying these tracks for your own personal use is still illegal. Only in the USA (that I know of) is there a "fair use" clause which permits this type of thing.

Either way, if you download and use a program called freerip mp3 it'll completely ignore any copy protection and rip the tracks for you. While I wouldn't condone doing anything illegal, I think the main issue here is that you own an Anastacia CD.

I certainly didn't realise that copying a CD for my own personal use was illegal, but thank you all for your advice.
