Putting songs on your Ipod Nano..

Im trying to update the songs on my ipodand have always found it a pain when doing so, usually end up deleting whats already on there just so i can add the new songs.. anyway, im in Itunes and am trying to sync the ipod with the new songs which have a tick by them, however when pressing 'sync' you get the 'do not disconnect ipod syncing' but the ipod itself is not uploading anything..
Anyone have any ideas before i throw it out of the window?
