Would it be sexist and ageist to announce that women and children had priority over who gets to go in the lifeboats first?

That's a good question, I'm interested in seeing the answers. Also the class thing too, all the 1st class were given the opportunity to escape and the rest locked (if the movie is to be believed?) until 1st were safely in their rafts.
As a parent, I agree it should be parents and children first.
Women and children generally have less physical strength than men and are therefore more likely to struggle the longer they are left unsaved.

Obvously, that's a generalisation and some women and children would fare better than some men, but when the ship is sinking you don't really have time to rank people accordng to their swimming badges.
the problem is as we are all aware, that the titanic was un-sinkable (ho-ho) and so didnt carry by design enough lifeboats for the number of passengers,

not the case now,

so unless it is a catastrophic event like a tidal wave etc if there is enough time there are enough boats
the Titanic sank because the captain smoked a pipe. if the captain had not been smoking he would have seen the iceberg and turned the ship around.

I do hope you're not serious, JoggerJayne. That's one of the most widely debunked conspiracy theories out there.
ouch thats website made my eyes go all funny!!
It did mine too! LOL
No, it would just be sensible. Most children, even these days, are looked after by their mother and survival of the children would be the most important. However, I can't see many men standing back and letting that happen these days.

The Titanic sank because it didn't hit the iceberg head on. If it had it would only have made a hole at the front in one compartment and not 4 or or 5 of them at once. The Captain didn't sound abandon ship early enough and whats more he didn't seem to have the foggiest idea where they were.
The White Star Line would have been sued to death if it had happened today.
Its hard to say about the women and children bit.
Today there would be enough life boats and no discrimination towards third class passengers.
But is it had not been for the sinking of the Titanic the life boat count would not have changed.

Nowadays on cruise ships each passenger is allocated to a particular lifeboat and very early in each voyage there is a lifeboat drill so that every one knows which lifeboat to head for in the event of an emergency. There must be enough lifeboats for all passengers and crew by law so the only time this may crop up is if some lifeboats had been damaged - say in a storm - or if it was impossible to launch some because of sea conditions. Then probably the women and children would be first.
In recent years one of my sisters was on a Greek boat which sank. As the sirens sounded the passengers headed onto the deck to find that the entire (male) crew had scarpered.
Children certainly. Not sure about women. Doesn't seem entirely fair. I'm not sure how relevent itis to today anyway.
My good Lord anyone tried to get off aTube train recently ... never mind a sinking ship. lol. Save yerself!!! ( This is the kind of activitity Mr Sense and the Sense-lettes excel at, I am far too polite and helpful so will probably be a gonner!
Well, China, I think the women should go with the children to look after them and bring them up if they survive. However much times have changed Mothers are usually the ones that children need most. Nothing to do with sexism or ageism - just common sense.
LOL sense4all. You are right, each for himself these days!
