Can anyone place this?

It may have been a remake of a 30's song but I remember it probably in the 70's and the first 2 lines contained something silly like

'your bald spot catches my eye'
' ....close cover before striking...'

The lead crooned in the style of 1920/30s radio show and I think that half way through, the singer and orchestra faded and the voice of a radio announcer spoke over the music.

I heard snatches of it in the background of a recent Midsomer Murders episode and the tune keeps coming back to me ever since but I can't remember the full lyric or titlle.

I have tried google and there are lots of reference to 'close cover before striking' but it usually links to safety matches or a recent recording by Luna and the one I am thinking of is at least 30 years ago.

Loving you has made me bananas - Guy Marks

loving you has made me bananas
(words and music by guy marks)

oh, your red scarf matches your eyes,
you closed your cover before striking,
father had the shipfitter blues,
loving you has made me bananas,

oh, your red scarf matches your eyes,
you closed your cover before striking,
father had the shipfitter blues,
loving you has made me bananas,

oh, you burnt your finger that evening,
while my back was turned,
i asked the waiter for iodine,
but i dined all alone,

oh, your red scarf matches your eyes,
you closed your cover before striking,
father had the shipfitter blues,
loving you has made me bananas.
