For anyone looking for good quality wrist-slashing music, Leonard Cohen has always proved very dependable.
Try "Love Itself" or "Waiting for the miracle".
Cohen's stuff tends to be more depressing than sad. If you want the latter you should check out Clifford T Ward. "Both of Us" has a real melancholy feel to it. Also try "The best is yet to come" and "Still not free".
Joy Division
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley (although Im sure some wont agree)

Pearl Jam _ Last Kiss

The Smiths and Radiohead have predominantly empathic depressing songs. They kind of make you fell better cos they are so depressing if that makes sense.

Fix You _ Coldplay (oh and "yellow" for that matter)

"Restless Heart" "alcoholic" "Fever" - Starsailor

All Apologies - Nirvana.

I love depressing music lol
Willy MAson _ Its a hard hand to hold
Oh and if you are depressed due to a relationship break up...

I couldnt recommend anything more than Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley.
911 heaven candlelight remix. Cry your eyes out
Loudon Wainwright III singing The Suicide Song.
I can't remember all the words but some of the lines include:

"When you're tired of wordly toil
Shuffle off this mortal coil
Turn your body back to soil..."

"When you get hung up
Hang yourself up by the neck,
What the hell, what the hell,
What the heck."

"Do the pony do the monkey
Do the slob do the boogaloo twist,
Cut your throat, cut your throat
Cut your wrist."

It's not the catchiest of tunes but it's actually a slightly amusing song!
