For connecting an iPod Nano to a hi-fi or other system, is it better to have a lead from the 3.5mm headphone socket on the iPod or from the main computer connection? I've seen leads that do both, but wonder which will give better performance. Any advice appreciated.

I bought a docking station (small square thing that plugs into the main connection on the bottom, not the headphones) a mains charger (as you battery will go down if oyu have it plugged into the hifi) and a 3.5mm jack (which goes into the back of the docking station or directly into the ipod) to white & red phono to connect to the hifi. the sounds great. You could cut the docking station out - but its nice to see it stood up rather than laid down. You could cut the charger out but then you have to keep recharging if you are listening for any length of time.
almc, just been looking at docking stations, i thought they charged up the i pod when in position. do they not?
Not necessarily. You can get just a docking station with no wires coming out of it. It makes it easier to connect hi fi wires, it's quite weighty and enables the ipod to stand up. It has the normal wide connection and also a 3.5mm jack on the bottom to connect hi fi wires and chargers.
