What is the name of the piece of music often heard in films and on tv as a funeral dirge - the only way I can describe it is to say that as a child I would sing the words 'where shall we be in a 100 years from now' to it.

Think it may be "The Funeral March" by Chopin. To check, try this link-www.8notes.com/scores/455.asp and listen to an exptract. - This version does sound a bit jauntier than I remember tho.
