As I understand it I am entitled to make backup copies of both Music and software CD's. I'm currently in the process of backing all of my CD collection (around 1500 CD's) into WMA format and then copying those onto High Quality CD's. Now lets say I take those CD's to my parents and then there is a house fire at my house. I lose all my CD's, whats my legal position, I now have all of the music backed up, but I dont have any proof I purchased them. There doesnt seem much point backing stuff up if it leaves you unable to use them.

your leagal position is dependant on your location. (UK/US for example) and if in the US, It can even depend on which state you reside in.
Bob, your public-spirited approach to the copyright law is admirable, but you don't need to worry. If The BPI prosecuted everyone who copies discs, they would have to fine most of the civilised world. Copying for your own use is tehcnically illegal, but accepted. If you are making wholesale copies and selling them on, the BPI would have an issue, but copyig for your own security is seen as acceptbale, although tehcnically illegal. Look at the rise of duplicating software - everyone is using it for their own purposes - like they used blank cassette tapes in the past. It's not the end of civilisation to back up your own music collection, which as you say, you purchased legitimately in the first place. I'd carry on, and not worry about it.

I'm in no way worried about it, just thought it was an interesting concept. I'm nearly there done about 1000 Cd's so far about another 500 to go. Taken me nearly 2 months so far but I reckon the rest will be done in around 2 weeks. My motives are simple for 50 worth of blank Cd's and a fair amount of my own time I can put my entire Cd collection into a small transportable wallet which I can take and play in my car, on holiday or work (or anywhere). No more do I need to hand pick 10 CD's to take on holiday and become bored with my choice in the first 2 days.
