How did pete townshend of The Who get all the crazy sound effects on his rickenbacker guitar back in the early days?

I heard that he used to stuff newspaper inside the rickenbacker guitar to help get harmonics in the feedback and position the guitar in front of the amps dead level. You can hear this to arresting effect on Anyway anyhow anywhere or the end of my generation..or a few tracks off their first lp such as the ox.
