Why is it that songs designated "love songs" are always absolute s***?

I cringe when it's "love song" time on the radio, you just know it's going to be a contrived, nauseating duet. . . .

ah yu not feeling loved mariner2? one day you'll understand them!
maybe because its often followed by the phrase.......On The Steve Wright Show.......!
Love the show Steve, keep up the good work.

Well, as soon as Steve Wright comes on I go over to BBC 6music, which is "love song" proof.
One day I'll understand them? I'm a bit long in the tooth for that I reckon - one day I might understand the appeal of the eurovision song contest too, but it will be after senile dementia sets in!
Not all of them are nauseating though.

God Only Knows by The Beach Boys for example?

Yes, a work of genius, one of my all time favourites, but I don't hear it played when they announce the dreaded words "love song" (I wish it was) but it always seems to be stuff like "love lift us up where we belong" or "endless love" or "tonight I celebrate my love"
Ah, I've got it, it's got to have "love" in the title . . . second thoughts, maybe not, there are plenty of good songs with love in the title.
At the risk of being un-PC, I refer to it as "hairdresser music" and it's contrived crap.
IMHO of course.
Think you lost the Hairdresser vote there Mariner2 (is that Gy Mariners by the way ?)
I understand what you mean though, can hardly class Beach Boys as a ...contrived , nausiating duet..but there is a world of difference between a Love Song and song with Love in the title.Love in an Elevator for example.
it must be love, the madness cover, thats a top love song.
Question Author
Yeah, that is GTFC Mariner - and yes, the madness/labi siffre song is great, but my point is that you'll never find it, (or god only knows) on a compilation of "greatest love songs" because they are full of vomit-inducing ditties like "sometimes when we touch" and I just wonder why this is when they are so obviously NOT the greatest love songs.
