does the saying 'don't get your panties in a twist' go like that, or like this; 'Don't get your panties in a wad'.

Hmm, I have only heard it as "Don't get your knickers in a twist," because the 'i' in 'knickers' and 'twist' rhymes nicely. Panties is the American term for women's underwear (bottom half) but the saying is recognized worldwide as a British one.
I have also heard "don't get your panties in a bunch"
"Don't get your Knickers in a twist !! " My Dad used to tell me this when i was little and was getting in a flap or being daft. That's the English was i think.
