I'm pretty sure it refers to Jackie Wilson, who died about the same time as Marvin Gaye. The only song of his I can remember at this moment is "Higher and higher". He was also mentioned in Dexys Midnight Runners "Jackie Wilson Said"!
I pretty sure it is Jackie Wilson who is referred to in the song. Jackie Wilsons hits included "Your love keeps lifting me (higher & higher)" and "Reet Petite".
"Jackie Wilson Said" was written by Van Morrison. And to forestall the inevitable follow-up, blah blah Top Of The Pops blah big picture blah darts player blah blah blah.
Jackie Wilson was the man who sang 'Reet Petite', 'I Get The Sweetest Feeling' and '(Your Love Keep Lifting Me) Higher And Higher'. I think he suffered a stroke on stage and was in a coma for years.
