What is the best site for free mp3 chart (music) downloads. Many say they are free but when it comes down to actually downloading the song there's always a catch.

Ditto Limewire.
Then if you like it buy it.
I agree ... although I do have about 40,000 mp3s that are downloaded for evaluation purposes only ... lol
Do you not have to pay a subscription fee to Limewire before you can download?

Not free then is it?
No you don't - stay with Limewire light and don't go to upgrade and it's all FREEEE !!

LimeWire 'light' is TOTALLY free... and does what you want perfectly...
babydust... I sense some animosity in your answers... wishing you'd discovered LW 'before' buying from iTunes eh?!... ;o)
Light version is totally free, I've downloaded a couple of thousand and no problems, fairly quick to.

Why pay for music when you can get if free? To anyone who says you are freeloading, I suppose they write to the record company to get permission before they lend a friend a CD don't they lol
Babydust - You are so wrong !!

No Catch
You don't have to pay and yes occasionally there is a free lunch - that's life !
@ babydust. Limewire is Free..........Ive been paying through the Nose to these Record companies for years' the First CD I bought in 1981 cost 16.00 and it cost them 50pence to make.....they are just getting a kick up the Backside and well deserved.............
