The best by miles is Richard Thompson's break in 'Poor Will and the Jolly Hangman'.
Mine is "Tear Stained Letter" (live version) also by RT - have we got a fan club here smorodina?
So many, different things mean so much to so many people, off the top of my head, i would say accoustic version of 'Layla'
Well I've been in on the secret since the early 70s and Richard's playing is sublime. Restrained and economical, but able to put more emotion into a short break than some other, more feted guitarists can in a whole career. And the sustained interplay between his guitar and Swarbricks fiddle on 'Sloth' (yes I tend to favour his early work) is remarkable. I can't think of another guitarist who comes close, although I also love Neil Young's soloing - not technically great, but always feels like he means it. I'm not a fan of all those high speed, technically brilliant, but emotionally empty guitarists that litter the rock world.
Mmm lots really...I really like Another Girl Another Planet by the Only Ones....and a guy in a band who played guitar told me once that the guitar work on the theme from the cop show from the 70s "Hawai 5-O was gear.
To my mind, although i'm not entirely sure what the definition of a break is, Hendrix - Watchtower, Dylan - Senor
