I play guitar quite well, having learnt how to read tab etc. The thing is, I can't progress much further unless I learn how to understand more complex chord shapes on the fretboard (the sharps, the minors, sus etc). Bearing in mind I don't want to buy a beginners book as it would be too basic, and I can't afford lessons - does anyone know the best way (i.e. any books/dvds) I can start to understand my guitar better?

may help you actually achieve the chords you desire.

I would suggest that you look up various websites dedicated to Jazz guitar playing as it seems that Jazz most frequently uses the kind of chords that make your fret hand look like it's been in a road accident. They often explain things in better than beginners terms. It certainly loses me anyway.

Best of luck.
Following on from Mortartube's answer ... I think you'll find that Jazz guitar chords were designed primarily for mutant guitar players with seven fingers on each hand.
take a look at YouTube.....search "learn guitar" lots of hints on there.....p.s. learn guitar by Jon Scott is a wind-up....hilarious. good luck.
