Best: Jeff Buckley- Hallelujah
Worst: Madonna- American Pie
-- answer removed --
Best - Jeff Buckley - 'Hallelujah' and Joe Cocker - 'With A Little Help From My Friends'.

Worst - Madonna - 'American Pie', Whitney Houston - 'I Will Always Love You', 'Frank Sinatra - 'Mrs. Robinson', Paul Anka - 'Jump', Wet Wet Wet - 'With A Little Help From My Friends'.

(please note - list suspended, red mist descending, the old gentleman has gone for a hyperventilate and a nice lie down ....)
i agree with jeff buckleys halleujah, but also jimi hendrix all along the watchtower, i cant even listen to bob dylans origional! worst has got to be anything nowadays really, most of the chart music is either covered or sampled and of course none of it is better because how do u improve on perfection? if it aint broke dont fix it!
the lemonheads covered mrs Robinson ( and I loved it but then I think Simon and Garfunkel are weak and poncey)

The worst cover version has to be Will Young singin Light my FIre

The best Im gonna jump on the Jeff Buckley band wagon, and say Hallelujah.

My favourite is Starsailor covering Jealous Guy.
Best: Johnny Cash - Hurt; worst (by a country mile): Mariah Carey - Without You. Joint second worst - every cover version Westlife have ever done. Ever.
best - nirvana (unplugged) - man who sold the world
worst - cant remember the name of the boy band but, it was in the 80's and a cover of strawberry fields.
favorite is the stereophonics - dont let me down
the strawberry fields cover mentioned was by Candy Flip-truly not too good
the best cover song is nightwish walking in the air, the worst is gareth gates unchained melody
Mad world - alex parks
Good, Bryan Ferry did a fairly emotional Jealous Guy, Del Amitri did a fairly funny live Ace of Spades. Even Robbie Williams raises a smile when covering some swing. Fry and Laurie doing Hey Jude probably doesn't count

Bad - 98% of all covers. Marah Carey gets a very special mention
The most annoying to me is Bruce Channel's "Hey Baby" being destroyed with whover sings it lately. Inane Whoo,Ha in it. Best cover was possibly Billy Fury's version of Tony Orlando's "Halfway To Paradise"
best Tom Waits Tom Trauberts Blues and any Tom Waits song

worst any cover of any Tom Waits song including Springsteen, Rod Stewart, and The Eagles

wORST COVER VERSION - east 17 - west end girls. The record producer forgot to put enough extra sounds on it so that you could not hear them sing!!!!!!!!
Comical ones are William Shatner...Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, and recently(ish) Pulps Common People

Ones to avoid are 99% of boy/girl bands that must just go through the Big Bumper Book of 70s, 80s and 90s hits and then murder it...even if its for charity its still annoying

McFly - Dont Stop Me Now
Girls Aloud - Stand by You
Atomic Kitten - Eternal Flame, and Tide is High and many more
Boyzone (Ronan Keating), Westlife - far too many too mention

99% of X-factor, Pop Idol, Fame Acadamy people who covered and then released songs

Phew....

Good ones...Yep already been mentioned Jeff Buckley, and Johnny Cashs version of Hurt are 2 that are favs of mine

Also The first Cut is the Deepest has been covered a good few times, and I havent heard a bad one yet

Knocking on heavens door and Live and let die were ably covered by Guns and Roses..but still prefer the orginals
Just to add Hayseed Dixie do great cover versions

I believe in a thing called Love
highway to Hell
Ace of Spades

and many more
i agree to the man who sold the world as a great cover and one of many bad covers is U.G.L.Y by daphne and celeste

and sorry not a big fan of comfartably numb by scissor sisters just doesnt touch the original
Good: Eva Cassidy - Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Faith No More - Easy, Disturbed - Shout, Morcheeba - Summertime, Tatu - How Soon Is Now (sorry but I like it).

Bad: Any of the many covers by Westlife. They have a special power to suck the soul out of songs and turn them into bland forgettable rubbish. The bar stewards.
Always liked Heard it through the Grapevine as covered by The Slits along with Hurt and Hallelujah.

Soft Cell - Tainted Love. Awesome

Put the Madonna one in the bin
