my daughter has just passed her grade 2 piano with a score of 111. She was passed this result but has not yet received her certificate etc and we don't know what 111 means. Can you explain - is it good, bad, indifferent. What is the total score and is this equivalent to an A, B etc?

If she took the Associated Board exam (this is the most popular exam board and it should say on the front of her music book which exam board it is) then the exam is marked out of 150.
The pass mark is 100. As she's scored between 100-119, then the certificate will just say that she's passed. A score of 120-129 gets a pass with merit and anything over 130 is a pass with distinction.
She's passed comfortably, and when you get the mark sheet with the examiner's comments on you should be able to see which sections she can work on with her teacher to improve the result next time. Congratulations!
The total marks are made up of a number of categories, which will have been totalled to give that 111. Among other things, it shows strengths and weaknesses, and will show your daughter and her teacher any areas she needs to improve for grade 3.

If you have a ferret around, you'll be able to download a few useful booklets and syllabus documents that set everything out for you.

And tell her well done.
