I heard it once, in the middle of the night, about 30 years ago!!

Was it a country and western-type song, AG? All I find is Eddy Arnold 'A Lifetime to Forget'. Can't get hold of the lyrics, though. The artist has declined to publish them.

I can't really remember if it was C&W, but it was a ballad-type.

No, I don't think it was Eddy Arnold 'A Lifetime to Forget' - I found a sound clip on the web, and it isn't how I remember the tune.
