The Karelia Suite Op.11 by Jean Sibelius

There are so many - Four of my favourites. Adagio - Samuel Barber. Intermezzo (Cavalleria Rusticana) - Mascagni. Moonlight Sonata - Beethoven. Romance (Gadfly) - Shostakovich.
I know it's a cliche but I'm quite partial to Barbers Adagio for Strings, you know the one they insist on playing during every occasion that has been one of national mourning. William Orbits remix is quite good too.
Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto Number One. When I was small, we enjoyed (endured!) a caravan holiday, and they had this on a record, and my parents played it one night. It has stuck in my mind ever since, and I've owned a copy since I've been old enough to operate a record player.
I love a lot of classical pieces, but I think mine would have to be Mozart's Requiem. When I finally shuffle off this mortal coil, that's what I want playing. I mean, I'm an atheist, but if anything was going to make me believe in God and an afterlife - this would be it!
Rimsky Korsikov's "Scherezade" or "Cavatina" by John Williams
Ode to Joy, from Beethovens 9th.
Mine would have to be 'Jupiter' from 'The Planet Suite' by Gustav Holst. When the music to the hymn "I Vow to Thee my Country" comes on, it makes the hair on the back of my head stand up!!
'Variation on a theme by Thomas Tallis' - Vaughan Williams. 'Miserere' - any good choir !

I just wanted to make a few recommendations which are also personal favourites. Try Strauss' Four Last Songs - absolutely superb and very moving (play late at night and loud!). The choral version of Barber's Adagio is excellent (better than the original version?). Mozart's Don Giovanni (try the highlights first), Cosi Fan Tutte also. Try the highlights of the Ring cycle (by Wagner)- you must get the Solti recording though. Hope this helps!
Beethoven 2nd, 4th & Emperor
Mahler's 3rd - especially the last movement. And for contemplative music, try Arvo Part, Kanon Pokajanen..utterly other-worldly.
Really envy you guys - I hear a classical piece and never know what its called, who its by, or how to find out.
Pachelbel: Canon in D Major. This piece always seems to pull at my heart and soul. It lifts me to the highest place. I always imagine being in a concert hall when it was first played to the public.
Erik Satie's Gymnopedies No.1. Completely timeless.
I quite like J.S.Bach's 'Sleepers Wake', better known as the music from the old Lloyds Bank ads. On a more contemporary note, I'm also a fan of 'Classical Gas' by Mason Williams.
chances are it won't get read down here but i'll post anyway! My favorites are, pachelbel Canon in D major, adagio for strings and beethovens moonlight sonata. The last one I love!
Patchebel: Canon Suite.....just beautiful
