My six year old phone works perfectly well but no longer receives security updates so I am thinking of updating the OS.
I have never done this before and although the instructions seem simple I have no idea what they actually mean! I could probably follow them okay but.....I'm not sure.

Have you done this? How long does the process take? This is the sort of instructions I have found online, that is my model phone

I asked about this two years ago and haven't mustered the courage to do it so would appreciate advice from anyone that has experience

Are you saying it can't be done; or it can be done but not by me
maybe by a phone shop but not by you

It can be done, but you have about an 80% chance of bricking the phone. Considering how many cheapish phones running Android 11 or 12 are available, you'd be much better off just buying a new phone. This would be faster, probably have more RAM and storage, and a better camera and better WiFi.
i will say my mobile is 6 years old and before that one i had one even years old, with no problems a little slower than new ones but it did for me, you don't need updates for you mobile ie: android 10 or 11 as you only get apps from the google play store and not from web sites
these are checked for viruses etc so safe enough
don't load it up with so called virus scanners they don't work they just clog up resources
should read "as long" as you only get apps from the google play store

The phone has 6GB RAM and 128GB storage so plenty of oomph in it still.
its android con of making people think you need a new mobile because you wont get update after a while if you don't get 10/11 12 updates and so on, very little alters your mobile with these update it wont speed it up or give you more memory theses are set in the mobile
just clear out all the apps you don't need and restart it once a week at least to keep it working well and as i said apps from google play store only
Question Author
I don't expect the phone to speed up or have more memory, it's a dream of a phone which is why I want to keep it as long as possible. It has never frozen or give me any problems of any kind and is still whizzy loading apps etc. The battery when a bit rubbish but I put a new one in.
I'm just trying to extend its life and keep it compatible with apps
