I only remember that female singing it. Nina? or something
It was first recorded by German singer Nena in 1984 - the original German version being a hit in Europe and (surprisingly) the US, but translated into English for us. A very underrated song lyrically, I think, but very much of its time - the fear of imminent nuclear war not being what it was back then.

As for covers, I have heard of a kind of punky version by Goldfinger and a more rock-style version by a band called Ill-fated, but don't know when they were recorded.

Nina/Nena. I remember a lot of fuss being made about her hairy armpits.

I heard Blondie did a version, anyone know if thats right? Id love to hear it.
A band called Nena actually - they just happened to have a female lead singer (whose name is not Nena).
