My daughter has just started playing the violin at school and really enjoys it so we bought her one for her birthday. Problem is, I can only play brass or woodwind so have no idea how a violin works. I know that we have to apply rosin to the bow but it is a really hard chunk and I dont know what we're supposed to do with it!!!

Please help so my daughter can drive us mad with twinkle twinkle little star!!!!

The rosin should be a hard chunk, usually an amber type colour. Just draw the hairs of the bow over the rosin block three or four times applying light pressure. Do this when the horse hairs are under tension and the bow hasn't been slackened off. Store the bow with the tension slightly eased off.
