I'm not a great fan of a lot of classical music ( the really die hard , stuff , if you know what i mean - which to me sounds like a lot of haphazard noise ) .

However , i do like some type of classical stuff .

I heard this by William Walton on classical FM this morning , which got me humming along .

- It was used as the theme tune to a television series - what was it - can anyone recall ?

- Have you a favourite piece of classical music ?

I think many of our composers do have a "British" sound that does appeal to us.

Elgar, who was a rather melancholy person, wrote some wonderful music just for strings (I have a 3 CD box set of his music for string orchestra).

Here is a wonderful slow quiet piece called Sospiri, written just before World War 1 and it seems to sum up all the sadness of that war.

Another lovely piece from Elgar, Chanson Du Matin.

Only 3 and a half minutes long.

A fairly rare piece from Vaughan Williams called Serenade to Music.

He wrote this as a choral piece (you can find the choral version on YouTube) but this is the orchestral version.

Don't forget old Gustav.......

Another English composer, who sadly died in World War 1.

George Butterworth, The Banks of Green Willow

I've always liked this even though it always seems to get played on solemn occasions

Hi laelia .

I too ,love listening to that , even though as you say , it's a haunting piece .

Also the narration by Laurence Olivier is in my opinion , the best narration of any programme .

Was this prompted by the thread yesterday: 'Why hasn't the UK produced any great composers' or similar?
This piano trio by Brahms always brings a tear to my eye...its so emotional...I've often listened to it when a bit down...it lifts my spirits.
