How come everybody who was seen originly auditioning could actually sing? Why were there no really bad acts? And how come so many of them had either beein in previous bands, had singing careers etc?

I haven't seen it myself, but I suspect the producers were keen to avoid the "freak show" element of poor auditionees (yes - there is such a word). Other shows (XF, BGT) are less averse to poking fun at the mentally unstable / terminally untalented, as that's what brings in the advertising.

Hmmm, wonder where all these people came from then. They must have had at least one audition each first with the producers etc.
There have been auditions in front of various levels of the production team to find people who can actually sing.

The USP with this programme is that the Judges cannot actually see the candidates and so they are judging on talent alone and not how an act looks or performs.

I think they are trying to find a new twist and it is good to see folk who would not be considered conventionally attractive getting through to the finals.

My evil side enjoys the auditions in the X Factor but like many I switch off after the auditions. I suspect the commissioners have caught onto this and are trying to go with a format that begins with talent and ends with a star, and not losing to many viewers inbetween!
It's the BBC, they wanted people who could sing and not just nutters like BGT and X Factor

Although a few of the "singers" weren't that good
No, I do not think there is such a word. Where can we send new words to be made official ones? I have got 10 of them and will post them on AnswerBank when some kind person tells me which category to put them in.
Phrases and sayings?
nooooo you have to find something more fitting. The first time i watched this programme was the last. I was turned off by the vocal theatrics.
