With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed last week.

Larry LaPrise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Cokey", died peacefully at the age of 93.
The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in................ And then the trouble started.

Many years ago the Hokey Cokey was a popular event at church socials. When I explained its origins and symbolism it stopped immediately.

My vicar, an enthusiast, loved the Hokey Cokey. He was appalled when I explained it to him.

It is a protestant mockery of the mass/holy communion. The various body movements refer to those of the priest when consecrating the bread and wine, e.g. genuflecting, elevating the bread/wine and turning to the congregation to exhibit them. The words hokey cokey are a corruption of hocus pocus, which in itself is a corruption of the Latin words used by the priest at the moment of consecration: Hoc est enim meum corpus (For this is my body..)

having read the link submitted by jth the origin seems to be clouded in mystery so it's anyone's guess.
