Do you do pub lunch times? Within a short walk of here, most lunch times, you'd find several pubs with live music. And, at this time of year, the bars, cafes and squares all have outdoor music.

A lot of the performers sell their own CDs, and I've bought loads and loads of them. I love indy music from "proper" performers.

If you did pub lunch times, you'd get yourself noticed. And instead of trying to join a band, you would take charge, and ask two or three instrumentalists if they wanted to play with you. I think they'd jump at the chance.
