Have just seen cd advertised in 5.1 channel sound, what is this please and canit be played on bog standard player?

I think you may be referring to the new Dual Disc format which some cd's are now produced on.

One side is the normal CD and the other side of the disc is to be played in a DVD player, with the 5.1 sound

Thankyou ukpuffy, would i need dvd with home cinema speaker set up to take advantage ?

It's likely this is a "SACD," or Super Audio CD. They require a special player.
