Hi,

this is a tricky one,but I remember this album from the 1970's.It was more of a folk type record.Would love to know who the group/artist was.One of the songs was the famous "Nobody wants to know you when you're down and out" Another song went something along the lines of "you don't have to wear your makeup when you're old". Both songs were sung by a female.

Sorry this sounds all rather vague and I realize it's a long shot, but it's been in my head such a lot lately. Hope someone can help.

See if this is of any help ...

Nobody Knows ...  was covered by Bessie Smith on Any Woman's Blues and Nina Simone did a version on Feeling Good, both released about the time you mentioned (give or take 10 years!).

Janis Joplin recorded it on a rare disc with three rap-type songs, but none of these seem particularly 'folksy'.

Peter Paul and Mary (yep, them of 'Puff the Magic Dragon' fame) produced an album in 1998 called PPM & (Lifelines) with a version on it. Very much later, I know, than your memory, but some of the other songs eg. Old Enough, Take the Chance, have a tone that echoes your comment about the second song, of which I have no ideas.

Let us know if these ring any bells.

Thanks alot Golem for trying to help.I really appreciate it. This may be more tricky than I first realised. It definitely can't be any of the covers that you mentioned, Although I didn't know that Janis Joplin sang the song you mentioned. Bet that was a good version.

I remember my flatmate used to play it sometimes.I feel sure that it was an album she had. I can't even be sure that it wasn't something from early 1970....Argggh... memory (or lack of it in my case!) is a terrible thing sometimes.
