Mony Mony by Billy Idol

Ok, 2 things;

first is, who originally did Mony Mony.  I know Billy Idol has done it buy my dad thinks its not an original so anyone know?

and second, what are the background singers singing?  sometimes it sounds like 'mony mony' which makes sense but sometimes it sounds like 'ragapony' or something like that.  anyone know?

Indeed it's not the original. The original was by Tommy James and the Shondells and went all the way to number one. I'm sure that when Billy Idol did his version, it was a deliberate bit of nostalgia and he would have expected his audience to know the song already.

A piece of useless info:  Tommy James got the idea for this song while gazing out the window and watching the Mutual of New York insurance company's "MONY" logo light blink.
