Who sang the song `Darling` in the early to mid 1970s? I think it was a white band, probably British or American. It was a bit cheesy but I would like to put it on my ipod for nostalgic reasons.

No, the best 10cc stuff for me was The Wall St shuffle and Rubber Bullets area. Yes I liked Original Soundtrack and Dare too but preferred the earlier stuff

Sorry factor, we crossed posts. Some of the words I rememer from that song was something about a picture on a wall "and i`ve kissed it a thousand times". It was an awfully long time ago but I can hear the song in my mind and I think those were the words.
Dolly, My Love by the Moments is the only other one from mid 70s I can think of that sounded like Darling
Question Author
I loved Dolly my Love by the Moments. It definitely wasn`t that.
Thos elyrics sound like the Four Tops - I can't help myself

Leaving just your picture behind (Ooh)
And I've kissed it a thousand times (Ooh)

It was definitely a white band. Probably British
I give up for now. Goodnight.

Me too. I`ve sent an email to a friend who is a walking music encyclopeadia. If he doesn`t know, nobody will. Night x
Could it be 'Oh Darling' by Supertramp from the album 'Breakfast in America'? Although a bit late, released in 1979, it is a different song to the Beatles one of the same name.

The lyrics suggested are almost identical to those in the Four Tops song I mentioned, but you seem certain it's not that song.
Is the song definitely called Darling , or was that just part of the lyrics?
Was it the song by Johnny Reid? "Darlin' I'm feeling kinda lonesome, I'd call you on the phone some, but I don't have a dime" ...?
That's the Frankie Miller song mentioned by Factor on post number one Joeyjake :-)
the frankie miller Darlin was a huge hit in Rhodesia in the 70's - very evocative of that time for me - all they guys were away in the army for six weeks - back home for five for about five/six years. Really brings back memories for me
Has anyone mentioned Darling by The Beachboys?
Yes, I mentioned the versions by the Beach Boys and the mid 70s version by David Cassidy.
I think the memory can play tricks regarding song lyrics and dates. I still think the answer is Frankie Miller or Four Tops or both

OMG chrissa you are such a star! That is the song. I`m amazed it has proved to be so elusive. And by such a major band as well. Well done.
Question Author
Sorry factor, I didn`t take much notice of your mention of the beachboys because you mentioned David Cassidy and I knew it wasn`t him. I`ll have to tell my music fanatic friend the result of my search tomorrow. I tried to hum the tune to him on the phone today and I think he thought I was nuts.
Wowee, thanks 237SJ. I'm glad I solved the problem. As soon as I read your question I could hear the opening line. It was a great song and I must go on ITunes and add it to my library. Thank You for reminding of it.
Well done factor30 and chrissa1!
It's good that you've now found it, 237SJ. We enjoy these challenges
