Sacha Distel had the bigger hit - BJThomas only got to no 32 or thereabouts.

BJ Thomas's version is the original, and in most countries the better-known version (it originally comes from the movie "Midnight Cowboy"). But Sacha Distel had by far the bigger hit in Britain, for some reason.

Actually, I'm sure it was written in 1969 for the movie, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford.  Written by Burt Bacharach...

It was originally in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (BJ Thomas' version). It was played in the scene when the lead characters are riding a pushbike around in the countryside. The track from midnight cowbay that Jenstar is thinking of, is most likely "Everybody's Talking" by Harry Nilsson

Both of them had hits in 1970 Distel in January got finally to no.10 and Thomas in Feb got to no.38.

Yup, it was Butch Cassidy, not Midnight Cowboy. But anyway, BJ Thomas' version was the original.
