Vitesse is French for speed.

Drives for DVD and other optical media are rated for the read and write speeds that they can sustain; 4x, 8x, 12x, etc.

oops... missed off the relevant part of the above answer.

Likewise writable and rewritable discs are rated to indicate the maximum write speed that should prevent errors and/or corruption of data.
