Motorists Find Caravans Irritating

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

What gets on your nerves the most? There are many things we all find irritating and a recent survey has apparently put caravans in third place of our all time irritations. Although we appreciate that people who own caravans have a right to drive with them to places of beauty and holiday destinations, sometimes there can be nothing more frustrating than being stuck behind one on a little country road at an impossibly unhurried speed and no passing places. Traffic can build up for miles behind a slow caravan.

If that sounds unduly low, they had stiff competition, only being bested by cold callers and queue jumpers. It can be very annoying to have waited in a queue at the post office in an orderly fashion with all the other customers when someone who thinks their issue is more important than anyone else’s just walks up to the next available window in front of you. It is disrespectful and rude, and you know their enquiry will take half an hour and involve the clerk having to leave their desk for ten minutes.

Driving and cars proved a plentiful source of aggravation, with tailgaters also riding high at number six in the chart. And of course, traffic wardens also scored well, or badly, depending on how you look at it.

Women proved easier to aggravate than men, with more than 80 per cent saying that little things wind them up easily. They were also more likely to lose it over the little things, with 73 per cent admitting that they were likely to lose their temper when the stress levels mounted.

Some suggestions for destressing:

•    Take a couple of deep calming breaths – breath in through your nose and out through your mouth.
•    Straighten your spine and lower your shoulders.
•    Visualise yourself in a happier situation, such as on a beach.
•    Smile – very often this simple action can completely change your outlook.
