Hundreds Of Millions Wasted On Shoddy Mechanics

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Drivers and motor insurance companies pay out more than £300 million every year for inadequate work by mechanics, new research has revealed.

Thousands of motorists have been forced to employ a second mechanic just to fix botched jobs on their cars, at an average cost of around £470 per vehicle say motor insurance companies.

Over half of all respondents complained to motor insurance researchers of sub-standard work, with nearly half saying that basic faults were missed by mechanics. Six per cent said that they had unnecessary parts fitted and a shocking 13 per cent said that their vehicles had been returned with major faults such as defective brakes and damaged tyres.

"As a direct result of shoddy workmanship our breakdown team fixes thousands of broken down vehicles at the roadside every year," commented a motor insurance spokesperson.

"Rogue mechanics are not only causing many motorists unnecessary expense but also are endangering car owners by not fixing major faults such as defective brakes on vehicles they service. Inadequate work is unacceptable and car mechanics should be accountable for the standard of their work," she added.
