Going Online Makes Safer Drivers

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Driver training specialists and motor insurance companies have developed an online psychometric test designed to predict how motorists are likely to behave at the wheel.

The Driver Risk Index has been developed by Cranford University to assess driver behaviour, highlight potential risk factors and recommend further training.

Motor insurance companies have supported the project and say that further driver training is one of the best ways to lower motor insurance quotes.

"In addition to identifying those drivers at high risk of accidents, the Driver Risk Index also shows some of the reasons why people are at high risk," commented the designer.

"By identifying the specific behaviours that contribute to a driver's risk of accident, we are able to specify more targeted training interventions aimed at reducing the risk."

The Cranfield University has devised a series of training programmes to compliment the course, providing appropriate training in at-risk areas. The key predictor of risk taking behaviour and therefore road traffic accident potential is an understanding of how individuals behave as drivers.

The assessment hopefully encourages self reflection and provides targeted driver education according to individual risk. This will be especially useful to companies who have employees that drive as part of work; it may lead to lower insurance premiums.
