Drivers 'Should Not Leave Their Cars With The Engine Running'

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Police are warning motorists who leave their unattended cars running on cold mornings that they could end up having to make a motor insurance claim. Officers from local police forces have issued the warnings after a spate of thefts across the country.

A woman left her car running to warm up while she went back inside. She told police she thought it would be safe as it was on a gated driveway. However, while she was inside, an offender stole the vehicle and was able to use the fob on the car keys to open the electric gates.

A crime prevention adviser, said: "Thieves will be out looking for exactly this kind of opportunity on cold mornings, so I would urge everyone with a vehicle not to leave it running."

This comes after a woman was seriously injured recently when a thief stole her vehicle as she scraped ice off it, before knocking her down.

If your car is stolen while the keys are in it your insurance is likely to be invalid. In addition, the thief will get hold of any other keys on the fob such as house keys or office keys which will then put these places at risk.
