In March this year our car was stolen and it held a private number plate. We now have a new car and both log books for the old stolen car (with private plate) and the new car (normal plate). The DVLA have said we have to wait until a year after the incident before we can transfer the private plate over to the new car. The insurance company have written the car off and state they have no interest in the plate. Does anyone know why we have to wait so long to transfer the plate? Thanks

Perhaps it is to give the Police a chance of catching the thieves with the car as that number is the only thing they have to identify the car. Also if you put that number on another vehicle you stand a good chance of being stopped all the time as that number will be on the database showing a different vehicle.
