I also thought so but I`ve just noticed on the test certificate, under the issuer`s name is a Warning:
A test certificate is not evidence that the vehicle is in a satisfactory condition.
What does this mean actually?

It means it is only valid on the date of issue. It is not a 12 month guarantee of road worthiness.

Basically the car was sound on the day it was tested.

Ah thanks for that, Knobby.

It is so that potential buyers of the vehicle don't rely on the fact that a vehicle is MOT'd.

Don't forget it is too easy for a scammer to swap dodgy tyres for an MOT test and change them back afterwards, for example.
