Hi guys,

This may seem like a stupid question to many, but as I have not yet(touch wood) had an accident; what exactly do you exchange with the other party following an incident?
Obviously insurance details, but do you need to give information such as address and contact number etc?

Thanks in advance

I think you are supposed to give your name and address, name and address of whom the car is registered to (if thats not you) and the insurance company name and address. Having said all that, nowadays if you give your insurance company the cars reg, they will find out the rest on computer databases (except for drivers name/address). If the other person doesn't look like a psycho, its usually courtesy to give a contact number as well.

from my experience, you usually exchange reg details, phone numbers, and inurance companies. you then phone to insurance company, tell them what you know and they take care of the rest.
....and you HAVE to let the insurance company know within 24/48 huors - or they wont pay out
daviduk, that may be true of your insurers but not all insurers. I have known insurers that give a 6 week window.

But..it is advised to let your insurers know immediately
from my experience and advised by a police man all i would give out is your name and insurance company details,

i had an accident with a woman and it was her fault (she denied this) my insurance agreed with me and was stalling settling the claim as they didn't believe it should be settled knock for knock

Due to me giving her my number and address and her being nuts she proceeded to constantly phoning me and visiting my house to try and speed things up

so if you are going to give a phone number make sure its a mobile
Insurance handler here - just give your name, registration, and insurance details.

Never give your full personal details, as some people are a little crazy, and I am forever dealing with complaints about people involved in the claim harrasing the other person and accusing each other of lying.

If you do provide your full details, and it's not your fault, the other person's insurers may contact you directly to offer their services - saves you claiming through your own insurance, plus there is no excess to pay.
