Bluetooth hands free and Internet chat

I have a Motorola HS810 Bluetooth hands free which i am using with a Nokia phone. My computer has a bluetooth dongle using which i want to use the hands free device for internet chatting. Could some one help me with the steps i shud follow? I have paired the hands free with the computer but am unable to figure what to do next.

All you need to do now is to change the audio device the chat program uses from your soundcard to your Bluetooth Audio or something like that.
In Skype for example, go to Tools... Options and on the Sound Devices tab, select Bluetooth Audio or similar on the Audio In & Audio Out drop-down boxes.
In Messenger, click Tools... Audio/Video Tuning Wizard. Click through it and when it asks you to choose your audio in & out devices, again choose Bluetooth audio.
Sometimes, this will mess up your general audio settings. You may find that your music now goes through your headset rather than your normal speakers. If this happens, go to Control Panel and open Sounds and Audio Devices. On the Audio tab, change your playback and recording default devices back to your soundcard. You can leave the settings on the Voice tab as whatever they are (probably bluetooth now). If you restart your music player, all should now be well!
Two things to remember, your hands free will only have a talk time of 1 to 2 hours before the battery goes. This may be a long time on a mobile, but when the talking's free like it is online, you may find the battery goes on you every now and then. Also, even if your bluetooth dongle has a claimed range of 100 metres, your headset is most likely limited to 10 metres. You'll have to use trial and error here.

For example, if you're using the standard Microsoft Bluetooth drivers in XP service pack 2, then we're on a non-starter and you'll need to find the CD for the dongle and do a bit of messing about, but it'll be worth it! Ralph, that was an impresive reply. Thank you very much but the steps you have given didnt help me. I guess we ill have to mess up a lil using the CD as u said. The problem is after pairing the device i am supposed to find this in the drop down list of default devices in sounds and audio properties from the control panel. Only the original device which says "SoundMAX digital audio" is being displayed. If you could assist me with this i think ill be able to figure out the rest. Coming to the information you have asked, my VAIO is running on WIndows XP Home with SP2. The Bluetooth dongle is made by Mavin. A CD was provided with the dongle which i used to install, but the device manager says Microsoft Bluetooth Emulater which shud mean the generic microsoft software is being used. If i am wrong in anyway let me know and thank you again for the help provided. Will be waiting for ur reply !

You'll need to use the driver on the CD, but there's a procedure you'll need to follow to get it to work. Read the first post on this page http://tinyurl.com/ckng9 which will explain how it works. The process describes the procedure for Widcomm Bluetooth drivers but I have also used this approach for Bluesoleil drivers, so hopefully, it'll also work for whatever make of driver is on your CD.

Hi Ralph, am sorry for the delay in reply. Was out of station. I tried the steps you suggested from the geekzone. The Red and blue icon in the task bar did turn blue but there seems to be some mistake. I was unable to add new device nor the old devices which were already paried were working. Everything just appeared good but nothing was working. I have tried to send pics from my computer to my phone which did not work either. So i had to perform a system resotre to get things to normal. May be my dongle isnt manufactured for this stuff. In case you have any other sugestions let me know and ill try them out.
I forgot to add that my dongle is also using the Widcomm Bluetooth software. I have posted another question in the same section for which i havent received any reply. Hi gautamk, it sounds like you were almost there but something conspired against you. Did you double-click the bluetooth icon or the "My Bluetooth Places" desktop icon to finish the installation? You would have had to re-pair any devices in the widcomm driver you had paired when you were using the Microsoft driver. I'm at a bit of a loss. All I can suggest is that you try again if you think it's worth it. Personally, I think it's worth it to use your handsfree to chat online as you can get up and wander around. Also, I have installed a bluetooth dongle using widcomm software on this machine running XP pro sp2 using those instructions, so I know that in general, they work but there may be something specific with your pc that's stopping it from happening.

As for your webcam/TV card problem, I don't know a whole lot about it so I can't be terribly specific. I suspect that it's something to do with video overlays. It sounds like the TV tuner is taking control of the video overlay (which is something to do with DirectX if I recall correctly). This is most likely because the webcam can take photos, but can't take any video. If this problem persists even when the tv tuner is turned off, it's likely that the tv software has a component that runs all the time to hold onto the video overlay channel just in case you want to watch telly. The simplest option then may be to prevent it from starting at all. If you click Start... Run... and type msconfig and click OK, on the Startup tab at the end, you can disable individual programs from starting when your computer boots. Have a look for anything that looks like it may belong to your tv tuner and disable it. Take care to keep your antivirus and firewall checked. If this doesn't work, it may be a service listed on the Services tab that needs to be unchecked. Be very very very careful about what services you stop from running, as there are some important ones in there.

Ralph, thank you for the prompt reply. Even i felt i was just few steps to use my bluetooth headset for chat when i first saw the Bluetooth icon turn blue and white. When i double clicked all the previously paired devices were lost. As you said i tought ill have to repair them. When i tried to add a new device i got the prompts to check if the device was on and the remaining windows normally but was unable to pair the device. I said no device was found. My phone and the Bluetooth hands free were both on and were ready to be paired. But none were detected. I tried sending a file from the computer to my phone. There was a message this time saying there was some problem with the bluetooth device. Nothing specific. So was afride ill lost the previous options to send and receive files between phone and computer. So, i performed a system restore which was succesful and was able to send and receive files normally. I was able to pair my phone and the bluetooth headset though the problem remained. Anyway as u suggest ill give it another try and see if it works. Thank you again.
Now, for the second issue, I have tried msconfig but havent tried disabling the services which i tought is too risky. Am not using my computer to watch TV; so i tried disabling almost all the software related to this. I uninstalled almost all the software expect one which i couldnt as i had many pics saved in that database. I contacted the Sony support but they were too slow to help me with. They kept asking me all irrelevent questions and gave me some stupid answers. Asked me to download some software which was related to using the web cam but was for a specific SONY web cam which i wasnt using. Anyway i have installed but in vein. Wasnt even close to getting a result. I had a chat with the representative for about an hour and a half but nothing was helpful. So, had to close the session. Anyway thank you for all the support provided. Incase i get through with any of these ill let you know and incase you have any other solutions plz let me know. One question if it not too personal. What do you do? I mean do you work or studying and which part of the world are you from? Nothing personal just out of curiosity. you dont have to answer them if you dont want to. Sounds like you were really close to getting it finished. The only thing I can think of is to maybe pair the handsfree and the phone to the pc separately. I'm guessing, but if they're both put into discovery mode at the same time, then they might discover each other and go no further? I think you're nearly there though!

As for me, I am (or try to be!) a structural engineer. I moved from Ireland to Southampton about 8 years ago to study and stayed here to work. I've been "into" computers though since I got a Commodore VIC20 around a hundred years ago!

I downloaded the start up control panel but was unable to figure out what to disable cause there seems nothing related to the video card or graphics. You need to right-click on the Generic Bluetooth Radio entry and select Update Driver..., click Don't Look On The Internet or words to that effect, then Next. Choose the Advanced option on the bottom, then Next again. Choose the Don't Search option, then Next again. In the box that appears, there should be CSR or Mavin or something else. Select the most likely suspect and it should say that it's not digitally signed just below the box, just click Next. The pc will think for a while and copy some files around. When it's finished, there should only be one entry in the Bluetooth Devices bit, and also only one blue and white icon in the system tray. Right-click the bluetooth icon in the system tray and finish setting up your system. You may have been here already and I apologise if you have. I bought myself a new bluetooth adaptor today (the old one was a bit flaky) and that's what I had to do to get it to work.

For your tv tuner, it will be listed in either Sound, Video and Game Controllers, USB Controllers (as it might be a USB device, just inside the case) or PCMCIA adaptors. It's most likely the first one.
Your startup control panel shows some interesting stuff. Both mslagent and WebRebates0 are spyware, you definitely don't want them to be running at start up. It might be worth spending a bit of time putting everything that appears on the different tabs of Startup Control Panel into Google to see if it's needed. AGRSMMSG is for your dialup modem which would be unnecessary if you were on broadband for example, and ezShieldProtector for ...(can't see the rest!) is for if you drag files to a blank CD or DVD in Windows Explorer rather than starting up your CD writing software. A general rule is that if you don't use it all the time (like antivirus and firewalls etc.) you don't need it to start up at boot time since it just uses memory and other resources.

Hey, first let me thank you for pointing out the stuff which i knew was something unwanted and was too lazy to look it up. This shud be the first thing i am going to do now. I have removed mslagent and webrebates. Thanks to you again. Now, coming to this AGRSMMSG thing, do you think unchecking would be suffecient or is there some other procedure? What about the ezShieldProtector? Am unable to figure what to do with these. Do I just disable them or delete them? I guess ezShield can be deleted but what about AGRSMMSG? Am not using the dial up which u must have figured out. So, it is of no use. Let me know what shud be done. I already use Lavasoft Ad-Aware but havent run it from a very long time. I just finished running it.
For both of those programs, all I'd do is to uncheck their entry in Startup Control Panel. This means they won't start at bootup and so that's a little bit more of your RAM and general resources that are being used for what you want them to be used for. Since they're not spyware or anything like that, and I assume you've got plenty of hard disk space, you may as well just leave the software installed.
Hi Ralph, Thank you for all the help you have provided earlier. However i recently had to reformat my computer after which i updated the computer with windows update. After i have installed all the updates and some other applications, i installed the bluetooth dongle with the same CD that I used earlier but this time the appearance was completely different from what it used to be and now am able to use the bluetooth handsfree for chat and to listen to music. It just replaced the computer speakers and Mic with the bluetooth hands free. Am posting this reply so some one else with similar problem might try this method which has worked for me.
