What are the chances of the Post Office being open? I've phoned the number in the book but it's just ringing out.

As it's Saturday, even if it is open it will shut at one.
Think most Post Offices close at 12.30 on a Saturday - but you can do it online through DVLA and disc will be posted to you.
I'd ring round a few dot - sometimes the larger ones will be open and not the local or vice versa depending on where they are sited.

If all fails, phone up DVLA and renew or renew on line - then you may still get done for failure to display (which is not that likely), but you will come up on the system as having up to date tax if they do a number plate check.
I don't know whether you still get the unofficial 14 days' grace.
here you go

I tried to do mine at the PO but they said they couldn't because I didn't have a bar code. This meant they had to do it by hand and they were too lazy. Sadly this is one of the POs that did not get closed down.

You can legally drive it with no tax for 5 days not 14
PS

I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?

When you apply for a tax disc online or by using our phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives.

thanks for the link jno, I'll drive into town and see if it's open, if not I'll do it online and wait for the disc.
not only was it open this morning but the queues of men renewing their tax disc was excessive, why do they always wait until the very last day, took me over 30 mins to get to the counter !

Yayyyy Chorley post office is open til 5.30 and so in did the tax there, no queue either! but on the renewal form it has 112.75 but the cashier asked for 118! said it had gone up grrrr, maybe this year I will change the car to a slightly newer one and pay less cos of the emissions
No days of grace these days, mike!

Dotty, you were lucky - ours here closes at 2pm but it was full this morning, with people car-taxing. I have heard that from lots of people - what is quoted on the form is the rate before it went up in the budget....
you CAN'T legally drive with no tax for any time - you can sorta drive providing the tax has been paid even if you are not displaying a disc because it is in the post. Get pilled and they can check easy and turn a blind eye, but if you haven't attampted to tax, they'll do you.
A lot of the renewal forms were printed before the budget, Dotty. Working at the PO we just get it in the neck when we have to tell the customer about the increase! :/
Some car tax went up and some went down! My petrol car went up £10 and my diesel car went down £10 from last year.
