My Father in law recently passed away. We cannot find his driving licence and were wondering what the procedure was in this situation. Are we obligated to return the licence or inform the DVLA of his death.

My mum died and I still have her licence and no-one has asked for it (in nearly 2 years). She had an a letter from DVLA about renewing her licence (as she was over 70) unanswered at the time of her death. I sent it back explaining the situation but they never requested the licence back itself.

Hmmm thats ok but what if, for some reason, they contacted his widow about something in say, a couple of months time and found out he was dead. What would happen then
Write the DVLA a letter with the deceased's name, address etc. and explain the situation and that the licence is lost.
You are obliged to inform the DVLA of any change in circumstances, which this is.
I'm not sure and your question has made me think how DVLA get to find out. Maybe it was one of the jobs the solicitor had to do (or the registrar of deaths)

Yes, that seems the best option
just let it run it's course Bestisbest, when expired shred it.
