Mondeo nasty symptons whilst driving

Driving along Motorway in N reg Mondeo, auto, 1800,16vlve, at around 70+mph. Have a Economy or Super choice button never used (owned car 1 month), so tried Super whilst driving twice but settled back to Econ. Car seemed to lose compression (around 3,000 tops) and whenever I accelerated a horrible hissing noise happened. Full water/oil checked b 4 journey. Did not overheat. Perhaps unwisely drove 20 miles home slowly. When stopped car it stunk of petrol, now does not smell and engine looks ok!! Exhaust ok from what I can see. Please help cos I am v worried about driving it anywhere.
