today I saw a car which was the same make and model as mine. It had the same registration except one letter was the next in the alphabet and a number was one up.

It got me wondering.........does the car manufacturer buy a few number plates for their cars - therefore there would be a job lot in "sequence" or was it complete coincidence?

Cars are registered by the main dealers who buy registrations in job lots.
the DVLA will issue larger numbers of registration marks to dealers which they can then pick from most of the time they pick them in sequence unless they let the customer pick the reg. So it is very likeley that the car you saw was registered on the same day or a day later or ealier depeding on which letter was different. I used to register cars on behalf of a dealership so i know they run in sequence.
