Have you snapped a wheel nut, or a wheel bolt?

A wheel nut

If you've snapped one of those just get a new one

a Wheel bolt

if you've snapped one of those (or a stud) it depends how much you have left, if you still have more than a few mm sticking out you can possibly get a set of mole grips on it. if its snapped of flush or below the hub level then you may be able to tap it lose using the end of an old screwdriver.

if it's really stuck in then you may have to use a bolt/screw extractor

it's possible to do it with just a normal drill, but very easy to destroy the thread in the hole trying so I'd not advise it. (or if you happen to have a welder handy and know how to use it you could weld a slightly smaller bolt to the end of the part in the hole)
LOL Builder, I'm happy to dive under a car and do most stuff on them myself, but this isn't really a motoring question as such, just general snapped bolt removal.

There are several ways to get it out! if the OP has a dremmal to hand they could cut a slot in the bolt and use a screw driver.

it depends really on how the OP snapped it on how easy it's likely to come out, if they snapped it by over tightening it then it should come out fairly easy, if they snapped it trying to undo it then it's seized in the hole and will probably be a nightmare.
A job for the professionals I would have thought.

I would ring my nearest garage, ATS Euromaster or the like and ask if they can do it.

Then re-attach the wheel with the remaining bolts and drive there in a slow and gentle fashion.
(perhaps not if the wheel normally only has three bolts, as two might be excessively risky)
Some wheel studs are "splined" and removed by hitting them from the front.

just a tad more info would be of help, starting with the vehicle make & front or rear
Question Author
the car is a clio, it is the front wheel, it is the stud that has snapped.
borrowed a easy out stud extractor going to try it in the garage shortly.
thanks for your replies
