I have a 1999 BMW 316i Coupe and the asc-t and abs lights sometimes come on when I'm driving. When I switch off the engine and restart the car the lights no longer show. Any ideas?

Try knocking off the Assisted traction control button or take the plug off to eliminate that, if not that check your sensor wires to the brake pads.
BMWs are notorious for abs/traction control lights coming on, quite often vehicles we repair(bodywork) have one of these lights on, obviously the customer always insists it was ok before the accident !!! we end up taking them to a BMW dealer to get them reset or diagnose if there is an issue.
Probably a faulty sensor, best thing is to take it for a diagnostic check to find the fault. Will cost around £30, Bmw's are well known for sensor problems.
Get the wheel sensors checked for integrity and clean.
