Question Author
Maybe. ;-)
i thought planetary gears
sun & planet, 100%
planet (small ones)
These are the ones that can contra-rotate to give differeing wheel speeds on same axle.
albags correct,
planet gears only
no sun gears in a differential

sungears appear in automatic gearboxes

sorry slurp, look at the link,
all standard diffs ie not a limited slip diff have 2 x planet gears & 2 x sun gears % a crown wheel & pinnion
not quite sure how mdoo98 thinks a diff works ?

Who called them "side gears" lol .. who's teaching you?
What diffs are you doing? Scalextric?
Can you tell me what Engineers blue is and what pattern you look for on the teeth flanks?

They are planet gears. All diffs have them.
On rally cars, we used to do the cheapie, and weld them up. That gives you a totally 100% locked diff.

er, dont want to be picky here mdoo98, but you actually stated-

'Diffs dont use sun and planet gears.
Never heard of earth or mars gears '

then state you are testing planet gears ?? which supposedly dont exist !! confused or what ?

then provide a link

which clearly shows planet & sun gears named !!

Albags- brings back memories, the chances are you are talking about Escort /Capri /Cortina axles, Salisbury & atlas , and yes they could all be shimmed and adjusted for float !! a common prtactice..

Yep Chas ...
I am an Escort Mk2 rally boy (ex, that is)
Used to build English Limslips (waveform plates, quaife parts, etc, etc.)
Eventually got up to Skyline GTR's .. ZF transmission .. unbreakable!
9051277 / 9051278 / 9051280
parts numbers for the friction plates in an English slip unit, 9051878 for atlas slip unit,
my heads full of part numbers like these, how sad is that..
Yep .. I have those in Escort Rally manual!

It even has PLANET GEARS in it, too.
got that manual to, signed by Russel Brookes !!..
