Warning light on golf cabriolet

my golf cabriolet (2002) has a warning light on the dashboard. it looks like an engine with a single lightening bolt through it and it says "check". I've looked in my manual but can't find what it is.... can you help?

Engine warning light, emission related, you will have to put it on a diagnostic computer to get the cause, does the car run ok, no misfires or anything like that.

Probably the EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculation) a bit choked with carbon. Take it off and give it a good clean and the light may well go out.
